"MY BROTHERS AND SISTERS of Talocan," Huitzilopochtli declaimed in a voice that seemed to shake the walls of the Hall of the Gods, "the time has come for us to destroy the weakling Quetzalcoatl and his deluded minions once and for all!"
The first rays of the rising sun turned his bare chest to gold and made his eyes seem to glow like mirrors in his black-painted chest. He had his full aspect upon him, and the power beat from him like heat from a stove.
This was a tough house just the same. After all, his audience were all deities themselves, if none as potent as he. They stood gazing at him with varied expressions, not responding.
Most of the key deities currently incarnated were there: Tlaloc and Xipe Totec, mightiest of gods save for the ruling two and their mother, Coatlicue, who was as was her custom absent; the fire gods Xiuhtecuhtli and Camactli, who was also god of the hunt; Chicomecoatl, whose name meant "seven snakes," in her guise of a young girl carrying a water lily; Micapetlacatli, the box of death, duly wearing the box, painted with snakes and skulls and flowers, which concealed his head and hence his visage, which was death to gaze upon; the twisted obsidian god Itzcoliuhqui, tittering in response to the gyrations of his insanity; the scorpion woman, Malinalxochi; the pestilence god, Chalchiutotolin, with his face full of suppurating sores.
Others were conspicuous by absence. Some, like the rattlesnake mother and the flower twins, Xochipilli and Xochiquetzal, because they had thrown in openly with the rebels. And some, like Mictlantecuhtli, lord of the realm of the dead, did not attend for reasons of their own, which might mean much or little.
Paynal, wearing his black-and-white happy face; applauded furiously from Huitzilopochtli's left hand and enjoined the assembled deities to join him. They ignored him. Talocan's gods held him in even greater contempt than did the people of Tenochtitlan. He did have power to manipulate human emotion, potent enough to work on a god or goddess. But not gods or goddesses.
Nothing happened until a cheer was raised by Tezcatlipoca, who stood at Hummingbird's right hand with his jaguar head and cape on. Then the rest consented to join halfheartedly.
Huitzilopochtli smiled. It wasn't a pleasant sight, against the backdrop of his face, and his eyes were disturbing even in the sight of gods. "Do you doubt me?" he asked.
"We feel constrained by the presence of your servitors, Lord Huitzilopochtli," said Xipe Totec, lord of the west, god of agriculture and the cycle of death and rebirth, sender of plagues. Out of consideration for his peers he did not have his aspect upon him. His divine semblance, of a flayed man wearing his own skin over his shoulders, was gross even in the sight of gods.
He gestured at the walls, which were lined by eagle knights with plasma-projector units strapped to their forearms, and swords at their waists. "One traditionally minded might ask, as well, when mortals are bidden to share the counsels of the gods?"
Huitzilopochtli's big jaw set.
